as pawel smolewski has revealed in a developer live stream, the kill with an upcoming assist mechanic also counts for the player who shot down the opponent when the final kill is done by a team mate. the killing team-mate only gets an assist.
however, the animation and gameplay leader of the developer team also restricts the game: if the opponent's final killing is made by another player who is not a member of his own team, the player gets the kill count.
